So tell us about your company & product?

– KWILTI provides accessories that are every bit as edgy and chic as they are functional. Cool enough for the boys, but made for a woman. We feature jewelry pieces made from structured nylon using sewing techniques I developed over a period of almost a decade. The techniques can best be explained as a fusion of millinery & quilting techniques. The accessories are a modern take on old classics. Each piece is original and unlike anything currently in the market.

How did you come up with the name?

– KWILTI is all about sophistication with a sense of humor. Since the whole thing started with a pair of quilted earrings, I did a play on the word “quilt”, an object that is very serious and sophisticated, and made it cute and fun. I took inspiration from some of my favorite machinery brands (HILTI and JUKI) since KWILTI has a strong focus on quality construction.

What best describes your product & who is it targeted to?

– Our products can best be described as “Retro Futuristic Urban Accessories”… i.e. new takes on urban classics. We like to push the envelope and create pieces that are unlike anything that’s currently in the market, but we like to keep the designs sophisticated so they are somewhat timeless. Our designs are made for women who like mens urbanwear and want something comparable that’s made with a woman in mind. Most of our pieces can be worn by both men and women, just like a lot of menswear can be worn by either gender.

What influenced you to start up this company?

– I was making art quilts at the time and a friend of mine who made rad jewelry asked me to make her a pair of earrings inspired by one of my quilts so we could swap pieces. So I did, and she loved them…and soon her friends wanted them too and the whole thing kind of snowballed until I just decided to solely focus on making jewelry and accessories and officially launched the line.

How are your products different from others out there?

– I don’t see a lot of products in the urban market for women that I want wear. However, I see a lot of products in the urban market for men that I love. So I’d like to think that our brand is one of the few bridges between the two right now.

Are there any challenges you run into while running a business?

– There are countless challenges to embarking on your own endeavor, but the challenges are what make it fun and worthwhile.

What ways did you find promoting your brand worked?

– I’m all about slow growth over time and the steady release of great product. This day in age it is entirely possible for an artist to go from obscure to famous overnight, but I don’t think that sort of growth is necessarily a good thing. Right now, my focus is on creating the best possible products on a consistent basis, and getting them into the hands of the people that will appreciate them.

Are there any future plans for your company?

– We are working on getting our storefront in Downtown Oakland open to the public and we are getting ready to drop our SS13 collection in a few weeks which I am very excited about.

How did you hear about FKN Famous & what do you think of us?

– We found you through a google search and thought your blog was cool. We liked that you feature new brands and do in depth product reviews. It’s great that you are interested in building relationships with artists, and take the time to conduct interviews like this.
